About Lines

The line object is the most basic and common object in AutoCAD drawings of any discipline.
Each segment is a line object that can be edited separately, assigning properties such as layer, linetype, and lineweight. The simplest method to draw a line is to click two locations in the drawing area, however you will want your drawing to be much more precise.

Precision in Specifying Point Locations

  • Use object snaps, Osnaps, to snap to locations on objects
  • Use object snap tracking to combine object snap locations
  • Use Grid Snap (F9) to restrict point selection to intervals that you define
  • Enter coordinates for one or both ends of the line

Precision in Specifying Angle Directions

  • Use Orthogonal locking, Ortho Mode (F8), to constrain cursor movement to the horizontal and vertical directions
  • Use polar tracking (F10) to guide cursor movement to specified angles
  • Use angle overrides to lock the cursor to a specified angle
You can use these tools along with direct distance entry to draw objects quickly and with precision.
